Jingles
Turning to jingles, these are usually crafted so that they become an ear worm and people DO love to hear them. But repetition can be a killer.
I adored the PAMS Jet Set series 27 (with "the fastest thing in the air" tagged onto every ID). It' was first heard in 1964 nd really sparkles, but when over-exposed can get a bit annoying after thousands of hearings.
Most UK-produced radio jingles to be too 'wishy washy'; they have little drive or real enthusiasm and many sound simply excruciating after a while. The stuff I adore are the 'proper jingles', with sung IDs and loud but lush, brass-laden orchestration.
There are one or two jingles that I don't ever seem to tire of - one is sung by a Dutch singer, Patricia Paay. "Sail Away" is one of a couple that she recorded for Radio Veronica in 1970, thats stood the test of time; it simply evokes a wonderful time and some lovely memories.
Favourites?
Everyone has favourite songs and I'm no exception. Music means so much to me that, when it comes to songs, records, jingles and commercials, I've a few more favourites than most. I don't favour specific artists or groups, just pieces of music, as that is the real ART. It's always the finished song and production that drives my choice.
Songs
At one of my former radio stations, Radio Caroline, listeners are invited to suggest a list of their favourite Top 5 songs. I would struggle to make it 5 - I've literally hundreds of favourites!
My tastes are quite diverse and favourites include soul, rock, reggae and pop. Mainly because I've been immersed in the stuff for so long, about sixty years. I do get tired of hearing the 'same old' as playlisted on many stations, no matter how good a track is. How many times can one hear Smoke on the Water, Stairway to Heaven or Bohemian Rhapsody? Many are simply so over-played by the majority of radio stations, whose PDs and music selectors have no idea of the wants of most listeners and are just "playing it safe".

Top of my all-time favourite commercials is the silky-voiced Patricia Paay on a Skol International beer advert, which ran on Radio Veronica in the late 1960s and on TV in some markets:

product in anyone's home, but we all knew the jingle - I remember getting contestants to perform it at a night club in Leeds. Maybe you would like to sing along now? (Perhaps best draw the curtains before you dance!)

These are pretty diverse in type (my main favourite music styles are soul, rock, pop and a fision of all those. There are two reasons for this - firstly, I've been immersed in the stuff for so long, about fifty years, and secondly you will probably find that most of my favourite songs and artistes, by and large, are not the ones that regularly feature in other people's Top Fives. How many times can you hear Smoke on the Water, Stairway to Heaven or Bohemian Rhapsody. I don't dislike those songs, classics - certainly, but having heard each of them thousands of times I don't really want to hear them a few hundred more times!
